Pup Survival and Development Following Hippocampal Lesions in the Female Rat

چکیده

Animals with hippocampal lesions, induced by aspiration, are inferior to cortical control and normal animals in providing some aspects of maternal care needed for the proper survival of their young. Pup survival of animals with hippocampal lesions is significantly lower than pup survival of cortical control and normal animals. Nest construction of dams with hippocampal lesions is inferior to the cortical control and normal groups. Female animals with hippocampal lesions retrieve sensory altered pups more slowly than cortical control and normal animals. The deficits in retrieval behavior in animals with hippocampal lesions may be linked to defects in their ability to properly sequence cues. On day 5 after parturition, pups born to animals with hippocampal lesions weigh significantly less than those born to cortical control and normal animals. By day 14 after parturition, there are no significant differences between pup weights of animals born to hippocampally lesioned dams and those born to normal dams. If pups survive to 21 days after parturition, there are no significant differences in a number of serum components when pups born to hippocampally lesioned animals are compared to control pups. Serum levels of the following are similar in all three groups of pups: TSH, total T4, free T4, Na, K, Cl, P, Fe, glucose, uric acid, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, albumin, and bilirubin. If pups born to mothers with hippocampal lesions survive until weaning, endocrinological and biochemical abnormalities are not apparent. OHIO J. SCI. 86 (3): 089-094, 1986

Medial prefrontal cortex lesions in the female rat affect sexual and maternal behavior and their sequential organization.

Temporal sequences of sexual and maternal behaviors in female rats and their correlation with each other and with performance on a sensory-motor gating response inhibition task assessed by prepulse inhibition (PPI) were investigated following medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) lesions. Following excitotoxic mPFC (n = 10) or sham (n = 9) lesions, sexual behaviors across the ovarian cycle were score...

Isoflurane Exposure did not Adversely Affect Recognition Memory or Decrease Hippocampal Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor Expression in the 17 Day Old Rat Pup

A previous study showed that hippocampal BDNF mRNA decreased in 17 day old (D17) rats, relative to agematched naïve rats, at day 1, 3, 7 and 14 after sham surgery in a traumatic brain injury model. The anesthetic isoflurane activates GABA and inhibits NMDA receptor currents, both of which are known to decrease Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) mRNA in rat hippocampi. Hippocampal BDNF is ...

P84: Effect of Insulin-Like Growth Factor 2 (IGF2) as a Microglia-Derived Anti-Iinflammatory Ccytokine on Improving Memory Impairment Following Hippocampal Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Rat

Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) as a microglia-derived anti-inflammatory cytokine has a pivotal activity in memory consolidation. However, there is limited evidence on brain cell-originated IGF2 expression, regulation and function in pathological condition and neuro-inflammation. Hence, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect of IGF2 on improving the memory impairment in a...

Effects of Pre-pregnancy Chronic Valproate Administration in Female Rats on Avoidance Memory and Hippocampal Gene Expression of Offspring

Background and purpose: Valproic acid derivatives are histone deacetylases (HDACs) inhibitors. HDACs are important in epigenetic processes. Some epigenetic modifications are inherited. This study aimed at investigating the intergenerational effects of pre-pregnancy chronic valproate consumption on offspring. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, twelve female Wistar rats were rand...

The Effect of Prenatal Exposure to Restraint Stress on Hippocampal Granule Neurons of Adult Rat Offspring

Objective(s) It is well known that prenatal stresses (PS) induce a variety of neurobiological and behavioral alterations, some of them involving the hippocampal formation. This study aimed to determine whether restraint stress influences the neuronal volume and number of granule cells in the hippocampus of adult rat offspring. Materials and Methods Ten Wistar pregnant rats were randomly divi...
